Mixing / Mastering

Home Studio

To save money, I can mix in my home studio. Or for more control, we can do full blown mixing at MMF.

Budget Mixing

For bands on a budget, this is the most cost-effective way to get the best quality on your project. Proper mixing can take up many hours per song. Enhancements such as noise reduction, EQ, compression, reverb and other effects must be carefully applied to tracks when needed. This involves listening to each track and testing settings until the desired sound is achieved. This process is usually complicated by multiple people with different ideas all trying to shape what they think they should hear all at the same time. To greatly reduce mixing time, I can take notes while recording your band as to what sound you are looking for and any effects or parts that need to stand out. Then I can take care of a lot of the little stuff in my home studio and either email you MP3's of each song for approval, or have one or two members of your group come over to put the finishing touches on the mix.

Full Mixing

Attended mixing at the Madison Music Foundry is for bands that are just wanting to mix quickly with few enhancements for basic demos, or for bands that want complete control over the mixing process. This option is more expensive because it takes place at Madison Music Foundry. The control room at MMF was designed to be very acoustically accurate, so we can hear all of the intricacies of your recording. I have many software plug-ins at your disposal to enhance your sound as well as to correct minor problems. We will go through each song until you are satisfied with every aspect. This option is also good in case we find a performance-related issue that we need to re-record.

Mastering

Mastering is the process of adding final enhancements to the overall mix and preparing the tracks for production. I do this alone at my home studio using separate mastering software that allows me to add that last bit of EQ, compression, limiting and saturation to make your mix sound it's best. I then listen to the track through multiple audio systems to make sure it sounds good anywhere it is played. Finally, I trim the tracks and add fade-ins or outs (if needed), then burn a master CD-R for you. This service is available for bands who record with other people as well. If you aren't satisfied with your final mix from another source, let me listen to it and I'll let you know if I can clean it up for you.
